Getting to the Matter of Matter: A Grounded Theory Study on How Students Navigate Texts in an Introductory Chemistry Course at a Community College in New York City
Several studies indicate that more than half of all college freshmen are not prepared to read and analyze college-level texts. The problem of college reading becomes more formidable when it comes to community college students, who often enter college with socio-linguistic factors that pose challenges to literacy learning. Historically, interventions have consisted of developmental, or remedial, courses after which students are expected to demonstrate college-level literacy. While extensive studies have been conducted on the efficacy of remedial programs in community colleges, few studies have examined how students navigate texts in courses that presuppose proficiency in reading. This grounded theory study investigated ways in which students in an introductory chemistry course at a community college in New York City navigated texts. It documented and analyzed both the students’ beliefs and decisions in the chemistry classroom and outside-of-school spaces as well as the professor’s perspectives of the students. The findings revealed that the notion of literacy reaches beyond the text (Moje, 1996; Rosenblatt, 1988); literacy and intertextuality necessitate the consideration of disciplinary context, instruction, and a larger sociocultural context of the reader. Because of the constantly evolving nature of literacy in context, the findings highlight a need to rethink literacy instruction in the college classroom
USING MULTIPLE TEXTS TO TEACH CRITICAL READING SKILLS TO LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE STUDENTS
Mastery of developmental reading courses offers both an opportunity for academic enrichment and a barrier to college completion. We examine what it means to use multiple texts in college developmental reading courses, the benefits of using them, and considerations that instructors may employ in their instructions. A review of the literature indicates Linguistically Diverse students (LDs) often lack the required critical thinking skills needed to tackle the rigor and demand of their college level courses. We conducted a study to tests whether using multiple texts improved LDs critical reading skills. Participants of 30 undergraduate students taking RDL 500 course were analyzed using pre and posttest results. Findings indicated that integrated use of multiple texts is a practical teaching approach for LDs improved their critical reading skills and their navigation of unfamiliar texts. This implies the use of the one size-fits-all approach may not be an effective pedagogical practice by instructors who teach the LD student
Contribution to Quality of Life: A New Outcome Variable for Mobile Data Service
The rapid spread of technological innovations like mobile data services (MDS) has made mobile computing a fact of everyday life for many people. Therefore, we need to understand the contribution of mobile computing to overall quality of life (QoL). Employing the satisfaction hierarchy model and bottom-up spillover theory, this study proposes a theoretical model in the context of MDS that connects user satisfaction (a traditional outcome variable of IT) with contribution to QoL (a new outcome variable for mobile computing) in a range of life domains. The validity of the proposed model and outcome variable was tested through three empirical studies conducted in Korea. User satisfaction with MDS was found to affect the contribution of MDS to QoL in eleven life domains, and these contributions in turn influenced the overall contribution of MDS to QoL. The paper ends with a discussion of the study\u27s implications and limitations

Spatially resolved penetration depth measurements and vortex manipulation in the ferromagnetic superconductor ErNi2B2C
We present a local probe study of the magnetic superconductor,
ErNiBC, using magnetic force microscopy at sub-Kelvin temperatures.
ErNiBC is an ideal system to explore the effects of concomitant
superconductivity and ferromagnetism. At 500 mK, far below the transition to a
weakly ferromagnetic state, we directly observe a structured magnetic
background on the micrometer scale. We determine spatially resolved absolute
values of the magnetic penetration depth and study its temperature
dependence as the system undergoes magnetic phase transitions from paramagnetic
to antiferromagnetic, and to weak ferromagnetic, all within the superconducting
regime. In addition, we estimate the absolute pinning force of Abrikosov
vortices, which shows a position- and temperature dependence as well, and
discuss the possibility of the purported spontaneous vortex formation

Association of epicardial fat with left ventricular diastolic function in subjects with metabolic syndrome: assessment using 2-dimensional echocardiography
Background
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is related with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) and poor cardiovascular outcome. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) thickness, measured by echocardiography, is increased in subjects with MetS. However, the association of EAT with LV diastolic function has not been evaluated in subjects with MetS.
Methods
In this retrospective study, EAT thickness was measured in 1,486 consecutive asymptomatic patients with no known heart disease who had transthoracic echocardiography during a self-referred healthcare exam. Subjects with a history of ischemic heart disease, cardiomyopathy or significant valvular heart disease were excluded. LVDD was defined as E/e ratio ≥ 15. Subjects were grouped into two groups, those with MetS and those without.
Results
MetS was present in 346 subjects. There was no difference in LV systolic function between the two groups. However compared to patients without MetS, patients with MetS had larger left atrium (LA) size and higher E/e ratio (38 ± 5 versus 35 ± 5 mm for LA and 10.0 ± 3.3 versus 8.7 ± 2.7 for E/e ratio in subjects with versus without MetS both p < 0.001). LVDD was found in 27 (7.8%) subjects with MetS, compared to 30 (2.6%) subjects without MetS (p < 0.001). In subjects with MetS, EAT was significantly correlated with LVDD, even after adjusting for other cardiometabolic risk factors such as age, systolic blood pressure, BMI, blood glucose and LDL cholesterol (OR 1.845, 95% CI 1.153-2.951, p = 0.011).This study was supported by Seoul National University Hospital (0420100700, 2010–1096).Peer Reviewe
Integrated Piezoelectric AlN Thin Film with SU-8/PDMS Supporting Layer for Flexible Sensor Array
This research focuses on the development of a flexible tactile sensor array consisting of aluminum nitride (AlN) based on micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology. A total of 2304 tactile sensors were integrated into a small area of 2.5 × 2.5 cm2. Five hundred nm thick AlN film with strong c-axis texture was sputtered on Cr/Au/Cr (50/50/5 nm) layers as the sacrificial layer coated on a Si wafer. To achieve device flexibility, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer and SU-8 photoresist layer were used as the supporting layers after etching away a release layer. Twenty-five mM (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) improves the adhesion between metal and polymers due to formation of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on the surface of the top electrode. The flexible tactile sensor has 8 × 8 channels and each channel has 36 sensor elements with nine SU-8 bump blocks. The tactile sensor array was demonstrated to be flexible by bending 90 degrees. The tactile sensor array was demonstrated to show clear spatial resolution through detecting the distinct electrical response of each channel under local mechanical stimulus. © 2020 by the authors.
